The Great Mahele, or division of lands, is proclaimed by Kamehameha III. The Mahele
provided a basis for changing the old feudal tenures to modern land titles in the islands.
Few Hawaiian commoners, however, understood the concept of private ownership.
Sustained by a tradition of sharing and common use where everyone had rights of access
and use of resources, by the end of the 19th century the Great Mahele had become a great
dispossession for native Hawaiians, leaving foreigners with 90% control of the land.

1850
Honolulu is officially declared a city. The legislature authorizes the hiring of foreign
laborers to work in island fields. Over the next half-century workers from China, Japan,
Portugal and other countries immigrate to Hawai’i. The first Mormon missionaries arrive
from California.

1852
Chinese contract laborers arrive in Hawai’i.
